1) The Spetsnaz Shovel @ Coldsteel.com
The Special Forces Shovel comes complete with a specially made cordura sheath. The sheath features an extra wide belt loop. The sheath and the shovel are available for sale as a stand alone items.
The Russian Special Forces (Spetsnaz) shovel, sometimes referred to as an entrenching shovel, is the epitome of the multipurpose implement. The employment of the shovel as a utilitarian tool and weapon are almost limitless. It is unique to Spetsnaz, as no one else in the world uses it. The United States Green Berets use a similar device, called the E-Tool. Some employment examples as a utilitarian tool are digging, chopping, slicing, hacking, hammering, paddling in water, sledding on snow or ice, shielding your head from fragments or airborne land, cooking (frying), and it can even stop a .22 caliber bullet.
The employment of the Spetsnaz shovel as a weapon can be comparable to a knife, however, it exceeds the effectiveness of a knife in striking power and range, while also being light weight and concealable. As a weapon, the employment is really up to your imagination and experience. Some examples are stabbing, cutting, slicing, deep tissue piercing by throwing, as well as manipulating an opponent’s body parts by hooking, pulling and pushing with the bottom edges of the shovel, and delivering heavy strikes and jabs with the steel blade and the wooden handle.
Although the above photo depicts blunt sides, the shovel is actually quite sharp and can easily be sharpened to your specifications with a tool grinder. If you purchase your shovel anywhere other than Cold Steel, we recommended that you make sure the sheath is included with the shovel or you purchase the sheath separately to prevent injuries during training.
Please note: this is not a rubber shovel. Polygon Elite does not condone the use of rubber training materials; like Spetsnaz, we only use real weaponry during hand-to-hand combat training. Why? Because in combat training you are not only learning employment techniques, you also have to learn the psychological affects of combat to control the physiological affects of combat. As such your training weapons must be real in feel, weight, size and even color. Otherwise you are just wasting your time. There is an old Russian proverb, “Russians we cut, foreigners we stab.”
Participants of the Polygon Elite 2010 Summer Seminar in Tobyhanna, Pennsylvania will receive hand-to-hand combat training with this one-of-a-kind multipurpose tool/weapon which can be purchased from our affiliate Cold Steel by clicking on the link above. All of the above mentioned employment examples will be covered as well as many more improvised techniques.
2) Russian Telnyashka @ Russian Military Store
Russian Stripe Navy Shirt – Blue or “Telnyashka” represents a unique piece of military clothing. This Stripe Navy Shirt is the favorite of Russian Sailors and Special Forces.
The Russian Stripe Navy Shirt has a long history going back to early days of French Navy, Caribbean Pirates and Russian-Japanese battles of the late 19th – early 20th century. The word “Telnyashka” comes from the Russian word “telo” – which means “body”. Indeed, the navy shirt lives up to this name and is affectionately called “telnyashka” to symbolize its body-glove quality.
Telnyashka became so popular over the years that you will often see serious backpackers and outdoorsmen wear it on a daily basis.
The Long Sleeve Stripe Navy Shirt comes available in various colors that are popular among various branches of the Russian Military.
Regardless of the color you choose – wear navy shirt with honor and with respect for all those that shed their blood defending the good cause.
If you’re Russian, when you wear a telnyashka, you wear it with pride! Seeing my father in uniform still brings me to tears to this day!!!! The history of the telnyashka is very old. The Russian Navy began wearing the bold stripes because they were easy to see from a distance while they were perched at the top of the sail acting as the look-out.
During the Soviet era when the sailors were ready to fight to the death against the enemy, believe me, Russia had many, they would rip off their jackets and fight in their telnyashka. They were know to fight so hard and with such rage that the natzis called them Shvarze tod (black death) because the rest of the uniform was black. Needless to say, this type of fighting behavior awarded the Russian Navy a well deserved reputation of bravery and toughness and the Russian people respected the Navy and loved the telnyashka, and still do to this day. After WWII, the Soviet airborne troops took the telnyashka as part of their uniform in memory of their Naval brothers fight in WWII and as a symbol of pride and glory. Later the telnyashka became the symbol of Russia’s elite forces, Spetsnaz and the Marines. The telnyashka comes in different colors, weight and design (tank top versun long sleeve). The maroon color is worn by the Russian Internal Ministry and the green by Russia’s border guards.
3) Training Knife @ RussianMartialArt.com
This knife is the second best after the metal version. Its form, size and weight is almost identical to the real Spetsnaz knife. It does have a sharp side, but the dull side can be used for non-lethal work to put your opponent on the floor, or hit against various body part to stop an attack or make him or her lose their own weapon.
In Systema, knife work includes every part of the knife, the tip, the flat part of the blade, the but of the handle and the guard.
This specific knife from RussianMartialArt.com is a very comfortable knife to use in serious training. If you have the opportunity to find the military knife like this in metal, it would be PERFECT! However, for training, you will need to dull the metal blade, but everything else, weight, size, shape will be realistic, and that is what you must always aim for in your training. Just remember to train slow and careful, building up your speed as your skills improve.
